Objects in mirror STILL closer than they appear

Why don’t they fix that on cars? Ok, I’m sure there is some explanation for why that is the way it is… because we all know it’s not hinged on lack of technological advancement. The only thing I can think of is that it’s overcompensating the proximity of other cars near you so you are less likely to wreck. And in the nano-seconds of reaction time in an actual wreck, I suppose they think we may process the 7 words that make up that cautionary sentence…? Or if it’s just to trick our brains into being safer than we would otherwise, couldn’t we do some tests to see if that stands up? ‘Cause I’d prefer my mirrors to reflect things as they appear.
